Sugarscape confirms that Alex Pettyfer has been cast as Four in the highly anticipated ‘Divergent’ film adaptation. With Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, calling ‘Divergent’ the next Hunger Games, it’s bound to draw comparisons, both in terms of fan fervor and the quality of the project itself.
Both films are set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity no longer exists in the world that we know, and both are led by strong female protagonists. Shailene Woodley has been confirmed as ‘Tris’, the lead in ‘Divergent’, for a while now, but the search for ‘Four’ had been heating up over the past few weeks. It was announced that Jeremy Irvine, Alex Pettyfer, and Lucas Till were three of the names that were in contention for the role, and Kate Winslet’s name also popped up in the news as being in talk for a supporting role. However, Alex certainly fits the rugged good looks of the character, and whether or not he can act – well, that’s a question left to the producers and filmmakers behind the film.
Now, with Alex and Kate reportedly set alongside Shailene, the film looks to be set to go into pre-production at any time. It’s being directed by Neil Burger, the director behind the visually acclaimed ‘Limitless’. Of course, it’s no Gary Ross, but then again, ‘Divergent’ likely won’t match up to ‘The Hunger Games’ in terms of box office or critical acclaim. For one, Shailene Woodley has not been nominated for an Oscar, like Jennifer Lawrence even before she took the Hunger Games role, and the director, while definitely sufficient, is not a multiple Oscar nominee like Gary Ross. The film’s script is also being written by a mostly untested film writer, Evan Daugherty, who only has ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ to his feature credits.
‘Divergent’ is currently set to release on March 21st, 2014.
