It is fair to say that Oscar night is the biggest night of awards season every year and one of the biggest nights of the year for everybody involved in Hollywood and the movie making industry. The 2014 Oscars are well underway this evening and the awards come thick and fast as the evening progresses, with plenty of awards and acceptances speeches coming at us.

The big awards at the Oscars always see a lot of talent battling for the Academy Award but it is probably fair to say that the 2014 Oscars is one of the tightest that we have ever seen, with a lot of impressive films in the mix. One of the hardest categories to choose a winner from this year would have to be the Best Achievement in Directing Oscar, with all five nominees doing fantastic work.

The nominees for the Best Achievement in Directing Oscar this year were David O. Russell for American Hustle, Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity, Alexander Payne for Nebraska, Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave and Martin Scorsese for The Wolf of Wall Street. The winner of the 2014 Oscar for Best Director is Alfonso Cuaron.

In his acceptance speech, Alfonso Cuaron thanked, as everyone does, the Academy, before going on to thank many of the usual people. Alfonso also managed to make a few short jokes along the way, before piling on the praise to Sandra Bullock, calling her the heart and soul of the movie. The highlight of the speech was the slip of the tongue, when he said "The wiseguys at Warner Brothers," before correcting himself, "The wise people at Warner Brothers".
