Now that we know that Mary Jane Watson will not be appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and that Shailene Woodley could yet be replaced in the role, Andrew Garfield has given his views on what he thinks should happen with the character. Andrew suggested that MJ should actually be male and that we should see Peter Parker exploring his sexuality.
Garfield explained to Entertainment Weekly, "I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ. And I was like, 'What if MJ is a dude?' Why can't we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It's hardly even groundbreaking! So why can't he be gay? Why can't he be into boys?"
He then went on to talk about which actor he thinks should play the role, adding, "I've been obsessed with Michael B Jordan since The Wire. He's so charismatic and talented. It'd be even better - we'd have interracial bisexuality!"
Considering all of the talk surrounding a female Doctor Who and a black James Bond, a male MJ would just fit in with the current trend of changing up familiar characters. However, the hardcore Spider-Man fans are unlikely to be very happy about it.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens on May 2, 2014.
