Actor Andy Serkis has revealed how he inspired director Peter Jackson to get on board with the advances in technology and start using performance capture. Andy claims that Peter initially only wanted him to do a voice over for Gollum in The Lord Of The Rings movies.
Andy explained, "Originally when I went off to work on The Lord of The Rings I got a call from my agent saying that I was just going to do a voice. But I couldn't really approach it like that. To get Gollum's voice I had to play the character.”
Serkis added, "I told Peter that was how I'd like to do it and when he was watching me moving around on set he said, 'Stop everything. We are going to film Andy's performance and then we are going to experiment with performance-capture'."
Andy Serkis declared in 2010 that he could not see why the Academy Awards separate performance capturing acting from live action acting. He has also previously played King Kong and is currently on the big screen as Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
