Anne Hathaway had been telling everyone she knew that she would be wearing Valentino for the Oscars; in fact, that’s what Valentino told people as well.
After designing Hathaway’s wedding gown, many assumed it was a sure thing that Valentino would also design her Oscar dress. According to E! News, Valentino even sent out a press release explaining that Hathaway would be wearing one of their designs. However, when she showed up on the red carpet, it was in an underwhelming pink Prada gown that drew unfortunate attention to all the wrong places, and definitely got her placed on more worst dressed than best dressed lists.
When asked about her dress at the red carpet, Anne Hathaway said, “I didn't know what I was wearing until about three hours ago. This is the one that spoke to me in the end."
E! reports that a source close to Hathaway tells them that she was, in fact, set to wear a Valentino design when she received word that Amanda Seyfried’s pale Alexander McQueen gown was too similar. Not wanting to cause a scene, she immediately made up her mind to switch gowns and had to go with the Prada selection at the last minute.
