In the most recent issue of the Hollywood Reporter, Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman both open up about how they lost weight for their roles in ‘Les Miserables’. Anne says, “I just had to stop eating, all for a total of 13 days’ shooting.” Of course, this ended up paying off – after losing 10 pounds over three weeks before the shoot, and then losing another 15 while showing her character’s deterioration through filming, she lost a grand total of 25 pounds through the filming of the movie.
Of course, that wasn’t the only difficulty she faced – initially, producers were apparently hesitant to see her, believing her to be too young to play Fantine and too old to play Cosette – “There was resistance because I was between their ideal ages for the parts — maybe not mature enough for Fantine but past the point where I could believably play Cosette [Fantine's daughter, later embodied by Seyfried]. And I did what I do when I really want a role: I got fiery and told my agent, ‘Just get me in the room.’
Jackman also talks about his weight loss, saying that he dropped fifteen pounds by not drinking any water for a full 24 hours, and then bingeing through filming to show his character’s return to stature - “I was eating anything I could. If ever there are any outtakes, there’s a lot of me burping.”
Les Miserables releases on Christmas Day, and stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baren Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, and Samantha Barks.
