While there are a lot of comic book movies out there at the moment, with more and more being released on a yearly basis, there are not too many African-American superheroes for the young children to look up to and admire. One has joined the fold in the movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as Anthony Mackie took on the role of Sam Wilson aka Falcon.
Anthony Mackie has been talking about landing such a big role in such a huge movie franchise and has admitted that, when he discovered that he had been cast in the role, he actually broke down in tears. Anthony says that he felt that it was a huge honour that he was going to get to play a character that would become a big role model to lots of young African-American children.
Mackie told the Associated Press, "When I heard I got the role I broke down in tears. I realised two years from that date some little brown boy was going to be at my door in a Falcon costume on Halloween. When I was a kid I didn't have that... Being the Falcon is monumental. I read up on him (Falcon) and immediately got into the gym. I thought if I am wearing that much spandex I have to be in shape!"
As well as starring Anthony Mackie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier also stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan, to name just a few. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is out now in the UK and the movie will hit the big screen in the US tomorrow (April 4).
