Every time we approach a football World Cup, you can guarantee that there are going to be plenty of debates about which players should be in the squad and who should be left behind. With the 2014 FIFA World Cup just around the corner, England fans have been having a long winded arguement about who Roy Hodgson should take as cover for first choice left back Leighton Baines. Should it be Ashley Cole or should it be Luke Shaw?
Chelsea left back Ashley Cole is a very experienced player, having played Champions League football for almost his whole career and amassing 107 caps for his country. Ashley has been one of the best left backs in the world over the years and his experience would be a huge asset to the England squad. Unfortunately though, Cole has struggled to get in the Chelsea team this season and will no doubt lack match fitness.
Southampton left back Luke Shaw has been a revelation this season, performing out of his skin for his club on a weekly basis, pushing himself forward for the England nod. Luke has a number of top clubs after him, including Manchester United and Arsenal, and will become a huge player in the future. At the age of just 18 though, his inexperience could be his downfall and his time will come in future tournaments.
There is no doubt that Roy Hodgson will take Leighton Baines as his starting left back and, while some feel that Ashley Cole should be taken for his experience, others feel that Luke Shaw should go to gain experience. The FIFA World Cup 2014 is not too far away now and we will find out who Roy Hodgson has chosen in time. Who would you pick?
