Benedict Cumberbatch is an actor that poised to breakout next year, so he should enjoy whatever semblance of anonymity he has left. With a major role as the villain in ‘Star Trek into Darkness’, and roles in the Oscar bait ‘The Fifth Estate’, and now a rumored role in another Oscar bait film ‘The Imitation Game’, he will be on everyone’s radar for a long time to come.

And he knows it, too. In a new interview, Cumberbatch discusses his popularity, saying that he knows that he’s big ‘on the Internet’, saying, “I was mobbed at the airport in Japan, which was not my usual sort of thing. It’s not what I expect when I arrive at the airport. It was amazing… Yeah, none of that is normal, is it? It’s fantastic. I think it was because there were a few people who were interested to talk to me about everything to do with my life at the moment, and to let me know that I’m very big on the internet, which I have sort of got wind of.”
He also explains that he’s always wanted to be an actor, but only really decided to go for it after he received his father’s blessing. In a touching story, he explains, “I just kept on doing it [acting], kept on doing it, at school and university. Eventually my dad said, when I played Salieri in Amadeus, ‘You are better than I was or ever will be. You will have a really good time doing this for a living.’ And I cried. And from that moment I thought, ‘OK, if I’ve got his blessing, I’m going to do it’.”

His father turned out to be right, as Cumberbatch has managed to take over Hollywood in the few years that he’s been known to the public. Although he’s a classically trained actor and has done theater for years, the minute he started doing television, people managed to find him and groom into the next big thing. The difference with him and most of the supposed ‘next big breakout stars’ is that he has the talent, charisma, and screen presence to pull off almost every kind of role thrown at him. Expect to see Benedict Cumberbatch for a long time to come.
