Boring Klitschko brothers luckiest heavyweight champions ever?

The domination of the Klitschko brothers in the heavyweight division has made a slight mockery of boxing as neither of these two boxers can be considered great boxers and would never have their names mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson or Rocky Marciano. However it is not entirely the fault of Wladimir or Vitali.

The heavyweight division is in possibly the worst state that it has ever been in and there is simply nobody around who can compete with the Ukrainian brothers. At the same time though, it does seem that both Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali Klitschko are going for easy fights. Last month Vitali Klitschko beat British boxer Dereck Chisora on points, a man who had lost two of his previous three fights.

Then at the weekend Wladimir Klitschko beat 39 year old Jean-Marc Mormeck who cannot really be consider a has been at heavyweight level because he was never really a contender. In fact Mormeck was knocked out by David Haye back in 2007 and Wladimir made Haye look average in their bout last year so the fight at the weekend was just to get another knockout on the record.

The only decent fight that there is available in the heavyweight division is Wladimir Klitschko vs Vitali Klitschko but since that is never going to happen, they will continue to fight bums and make their boxing records look more impressive than their talent deserves. There are a few up and coming boxers in the likes of Englishman David Price and American Deontay Wilder but the Klitschko brothers could be long gone before these two fighters are ready for a world title fight.

No disrespect to the Klitschko brothers, they can only beat what is put in front of them but it does seem that they keep going against the worst of a bad bunch rather than actual title contenders. Let’s hope that something changes very soon or it could be a long time before heavyweight boxing returns to its former greatness.
