When it comes to casting an actor to voice a particular character in a huge blockbuster movie, it seems that Marvel have gone a couple of different ways for their upcoming movie Guardians of the Galaxy. While it seems that Vin Diesel was chosen because they felt his voice would be perfect for the way Groot is, they had other ideas for casting the role of Rocket Raccoon.
Rather than going for the actor they thought would give the best voice suited to a raccoon, they instead decided that they wanted somebody giving their natural voice and not forcing a raccoon sounding voice. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has admitted that they listened to a lot of movie monologues, before they got to Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook.
Feige was chatting to EntertainmentWise during an exclusive Q&A, when he explained, "We just took great monologues from great actors in other movies and put it against the walk cycle. So these were from lots of other movies, so clearly they weren’t playing it like a raccoon."
He added, "They had no idea we were putting their Academy Award winning monologues against a walking raccoon cycle. We did it for Bradley and his scene with Robert De Niro in Silver Linings Playbook and something about that sort of clicked and it was very exciting to us."
Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn, who also had a hand in writing the movie along with Nicole Perlman. Guardians of the Galaxy will open on July 31 in the UK and August 1 in the US.
