Cam Newton's university football coach Gene Chizik gave Carolina Panthers football fans much reason for optimism when he revealed that the starting quarterback had matured greatly since his days as the star of the Auburn University's football team.
This news is music to the eyes and ears of Carolina Panthers fans who understand that the team will only go as far as the talented quarterback will take them in a NFC South Division that is also home to two of the top quarterbacks in the National Football League, Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints and Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons.
Moreover, there is nothing more 'scary' to the defensive co-ordinator of an NFL team than to have to play against a supremely talented quarterback whose maturity is similar or equal to his athletic gifts. Usually, a player has great athleticism and questionable maturity or great maturity but limited athleticism but when one has both great athleticism and maturity that player becomes a nightmare for opponents which is why players such as Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson have caused grown men to lose much of their hair and sleep over the past several years.
Very few NFL fans have ever questioned the talent of Cam Newton but his maturity as a young player and leader of a team is something that some football observers have pointed to as part of the reason for the lack of playoff success the team enjoyed since his arrival in the league.
If his maturity has improved to the point where it is no longer an issue that is great news for the Carolina Panthers and 'scary' news for the rest of the teams in the National Football League, especially those in the National Football Conference (NFC) because there is arguably no quarterback more talented or more physically gifted that Cam Newton.
Much of the off-season attention about potential Super Bowl teams that could emerge out of the NFC has not included the Carolina Panthers but the 'new' Cam Newton has some fans of this team looking back to his breakout year in 2010 as a college football player to appreciate how he is someone who can produce exceptional results when not expected.
When he arrived at Auburn University no football observers expected the team to be a national championship contender with him leading the team but he showed exceptional leadership from the moment he arrived on campus from Blinn College in leading players in 'extra' workouts and bonding with teammates and the end product was a national championship.
A more mature Cam Newton as quarterback for the Carolina Panthers makes this team a very scary team for opponents and could result in them becoming the surprise NFL team of the 2015-16 season and someone no one will want to see in the NFL playoffs.
