Champions League Preview: Shakhtar Donetsk - Borussia Dortmund

  • Borussia Dortmund travel to Ukraine to face Shakhtar Donetsk
  • Shakhtar have not played competitive football since November
  • Borussia Dortmund have been unbeaten in the group stages
In this east meets west match in the Champions League,  Borussia Dortmund travel to Ukraine to face Shakhtar Donetsk.
Shakhtar are without Willian who joined Anzhi in January

The Bundesliga side remained unbeaten in the group stages overcoming giants such as Real Madrid, Manchester City and Ajax, while Shakhtar finished second ahead of reigning European champions Chelsea.

Shakhtar have been playing a series of friendlies to keep players in full match fitness. They have won 10 games out 12 but Dortmund will be tougher test for the Urkranian outfit. Dortmund have also been in similar form in the Bundesliga. Klopp's side beat Hoffenheim, Werder Bremen, Nurnberg and Leverkusen but were shocked 4-1 by Hamburger at the weekend.

Borussia Dortmund head coach Jurgen Klopp says he has been studying Champions League opponents Shakhtar Donetsk in training and knows they play a skilful brand of 'modern football'. He says Borussia Dortmund will not be daunted by Wednesday's away fixture and his team are highly motivated.

Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu has been impressed by their opponents' form so far this season.

"Dortmund won the strongest group in this season's competition and that gives you an idea of how good they are," he said.

"No one else in the Bundesliga plays such a passing and flowing game as Dortmund."

Possible Starting XI:

Shakhtar Donetsk (4-2-3-1): Pyatov-Rat, Chygrynskiy, Rakitskiy, Srna-Taison, Fernandinho, Stepanenko, Alex Teixeira-Mkhitaryan, Luiz Adriano

Borussia Dortmund (4-3-3): Weidenfeller-Piszczek, Subotic, Hummels, Schmelzer-Blaszczykowski, Kehl, S. Bender-Gotze, Lewandowski, Reus
