When it was revealed that Christopher McQuarrie had decided to cast Tom Cruise in the role of Jack Reacher, many people criticised him for it. After all, Jack Reacher is supposed to be a 6'5", blond-haired man. However, Christopher has defended his decision, saying that Tom has the same attitude as Jack Reacher.
While talking to Digital Spy, McQuarrie explained, “More than anything else his mindset, his attitude, the way he handles pressure. Reacher is very much a character who does not let pressure get to him. He becomes very calm and very focused under pressure. Tom's very much the same way.” He also praised Tom for doing his own stunts during the car chase scene.
Christopher added, “That was less challenging than getting two people into a diner to have a conversation. Action to me is something very fun to shoot. The challenge in most car chases is you're trying to hide the fact that it's not the actor driving. The challenge here was the exact opposite. We were trying to find a way to show that it was always Tom driving. He's literally driving in every stunt sequence.”
As well as Tom Cruise, Jack Reacher also stars Rosamund Pike, Jai Courtney and Robert Duvall and is was released in the US on December 21, before then being released in the UK on December 26.
