There have been many special players to grace the football pitch over the decades and it is fair to say that Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is up there with the best of them. There has been a long running debate about who is the better player out of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and, no matter which one you back, you cannot deny that Cristiano Ronaldo is a great player.
Since leaving Manchester United to join Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo has been scoring goals for fun, averaging over a goal every game and, this season he has been prolific in the Champions League scoring 13 goals in the competition already. This puts Cristiano Ronaldo on course to break the Champions League record for most goals scored in a season.
The record currently stands at 14 which is jointly held by Jose Altafini, the legendary Milan player from the sixties, and Cristiano Ronaldo's great rival Lionel Messi. With Real Madrid now into the quarter-finals of the Champions League, that means that, as long as he avoids any injuries, Cristiano Ronaldo will have a minimum of two more matches to try to break the record and could possibly have even more.
As for his goalscoring record for Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo now has 242 goals in 236 games for the club, taking him to joint fourth in the all time records list with the great Ferenc Puskas. Meanwhile, Carlos Santillana is in third with 284 goals in 645 games; Aldredo Di Stefano is second with 305 goals in 392 games; and Raul is top with 323 goals in 741 games. With Cristiano Ronaldo just 81 goals behind Raul, it will surely only be a matter of time before he breaks the record.
