Mexican actor Demián Bichir has been nominated for both the 2012 SAG and Film Independent Spirit Awards in the Best Male Lead category, for his performance as Carlos Galindo in the movie A Better Life. The movie, which was directed by Chris Weitz (The Twilight Saga: New Moon), centres around a hard working, immigrant, single father, who embarks on a physical and spiritual journey in order to reconnect with his teenage son.
Bichir explained, "I feel honored to be a part of this movie, and to be nominated for this award. I am in debt to Chris Weitz, for having trusted me with this amazing character. Nothing that is on the screen could have been done without Chris’s direction. Being nominated for SAG Award, this is the actors vote and it makes me immensely proud.”
He added, “It's a double honor to be nominated among such wonderful actors in the same category. I will thank Chris Weitz forever for having given me such an amazing character. My biggest hope is that people who haven't seen the film can watch it now and be moved by it."
Chris praised Demián for his performance in the movie, “Demián gave his heart and soul to give a voice to the voiceless, and I am delighted that the independent film community, as well as his peers is recognizing his performance for this film,” he explained. The SAG Awards will take place on Sunday, January 29, 2012 and the Film Independent Spirit Awards will take place on Saturday, February 25, 2012.
