After years of discusses and all the hype leading up to the fight, as well as the amount of money that was involved, it is no surprise that the Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather fight received a huge amount of backlash. The fight has definitely hurt the reputations of both fighters and, with Floyd also looking to retire this year, boxing is going to need a new superstar to watch and admire.
Deontay Wilder is a very exciting boxer

Over the past few years, American heavyweight boxing star Deontay Wilder has been rising through the ranks, going on to win the WBC title at the beginning of the year, with a sensational record of 33 fights, 33 wins, and 32 knockouts. While there are still a few people who like to criticise Deontay, he is winning over more and more people all the time and rightly so.

It has been a long time since we have seen an American boxer dominate the heavyweight division but Deontay Wilder certainly has what it takes to do just that. With an American heavyweight ruling the division, we could well see heavyweight boxing return to its best and, with the world looking for a new star, Deontay could well be the new saviour of boxing.

What could also help boxing, and the heavyweight division in particular, is the fact that there are a few other exciting fighters coming through. Tyson Fury is on the verge of a heavyweight title shot, while we have the likes of Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker who are really impressing at the early stages of their career. While boxing took a big hit at the weekend, it could actually be for the better.
