The 2013 Oscar Awards tried to inject some fresh blood into the ceremony by hiring Seth MacFarlane as the host, but the producers came under criticism for a sexist and largely boring telecast that still went far too long. This year, the producers previously said that they were going to try to bring back some old faces to host, and they've certainly achieved that.
Ellen Degeneres has officially been confirmed to host the 2014 Oscar Awards, her second time hosting the awards. She's been one of the few hosts that's managed to get strong reviews for her abilities to stay funny without going overboard, and everyone is clearly happy that she's agreed to host. The producers released a statement saying, "We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres host the Oscars. As a longtime friend, we had always hoped to find a project for us to do together and nothing could be more exciting than teaming up to do the Oscars. There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are."
Ellen herself also added, "I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say - the third time's the charm."
Ellen and her show have grown significantly in popularity since the last time she hosted the show, which was several years ago. No doubt, the fact that she's hosting will mean there will be some interesting sketches and collaborations, but this is definitely an improvement to having Billy Crystal or the like host again.
