When Emmanuelle Riva’s name was called when Best Actress at the BAFTA’s were announced, many thought they were hearing wrong. It couldn’t possibly be anyone other than Jennifer Lawrence or Jessica Chastain, the current awards frontrunners – but sure enough, it was 85-year-old Riva that has begun to gain momentum as the Oscars approach ever closer.
However, the fact that Riva wasn’t there to receive her award might put off certain Oscar voters who might think of her as ungracious. Well, that’s not the case – she was just really, really tired. In a new interview with the Guardian, Riva discusses the BAFTAs and awards season, saying, “I cannot possibly come to London. How can I? I have to go to the Césars and the Oscars and already I am so, so tired and so, so harassed. For five months people have not left me alone. I have done 15 interviews a day, sometimes. After the Oscars I intend to rest and I can tell you that I cannot wait until it is after the Oscars."
Riva genuinely doesn’t seem to care whether she wins the Oscar or not, but as she turns 86 during the day of the Oscars and this may be the last chance to reward her, how can Oscar voters turn down that opportunity?
Either way, we’ll know for sure who will win on the night of the Oscars on February 24th. Right now, it’s a three horse race between Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, and Emmanuelle Riva, with Riva pulling steadily ahead after the BAFTA win gave her a big bump.
