Divergent stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James, and it's based on a series of young adult novels that are supposedly predicted to become the next 'Hunger Games'. The first teaser for the film, directed by Neil Burger, has officially been released by Summit, which also released the Twilight films.
The trailer's only 13 seconds long, but it shows Shailene's character Beatrice Prior being told that she's different, or 'divergent', and that 'they can't control her'. We get a brief glimpse of Kate Winslet walking by, and then Theo James' Four telling Shailene, "If you want to survive, follow me."
That leads into a series of quick cuts that focus on the fighting sequences, with the final scene being Shailene and Zoe Kravitz jumping out of a train.
Visually, the film looks stunning, but the worry is that there is too much worldbuilding to explain to the audiences. It's difficult to maintain an audience's interest in a film the backstory that's present in novels, and one of the biggest reasons The Hunger Games worked so well as dystopia was that there weren't many elements that were different from our world today. In Divergent, the whole world is incredibly detailed and intricate, and it's too difficult to explain it in a trailer. However, they did an effective job of conveying the main conflict within these thirteen seconds, and the full-length theatrical trailer will probably be releasing soon.
