Hollywood actor Gerard Butler has revealed how he had a near death experience while surfing for his latest movie Chasing Mavericks. Gerard stated how he and Jonny Weston did the majority of their own surf scenes and one time the wave got the better of him.

Butler explained to Collider, “Most of the surfing was us. A couple of those bigger shots with the huge waves weren’t us, but [Jonny Weston and I] both surfed Mavericks. Mavericks was where I was taken down.”
He added, “I was in the water and a big wave came, and it taught me a lesson. It’s funny because Grant Washburn, who actually taught me to surf, talked about it before it happened. He said, “Sometimes the ocean will just hold you down. She’ll pin you down by the shoulders and say, ‘I’m going to let you up this time, but I don’t have to.’” When I was down there, I realized that I was completely at the mercy of this power. It’s not a pleasant experience.”

As well as Gerard Butler and Jonny Weston, Chasing Mavericks also stars Elisabeth Shue and Abigail Spencer. Chasing Mavericks is directed by Michael Apted and is set to be released in the US on October 26.
