When it was announced that the Green Lantern was being made into a big screen blockbuster and it was confirmed that the budget was set to be $200 million, everybody was expecting a great film. However, it seems that everybody was left disappointed, including some of the people involved.
There were questions asked about the decision to have Ryan Reynolds playing the titular character, since he had began to become a rom-com actor and was already a superhero in the form Wade Wilson aka Deadpool in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie. And those questions were lent weight by the actors lacklustre performance.
As well as that, there was the dull script, which was poorly written and also poorly executed. Which was worse is debatable but the script certainly did not help the actors involved in the movie. Even the direction of the movie was average at best, which once again is a hindrance on the actors themselves.
All of these added up to make Green Lantern a big budget blockbuster flop and talk of a sequel have been ridiculed by fans of the comic book hero. A reboot of the franchise would be a better option, although fans a wary of that also. Green Lantern did manage to gross $220 million worldwide, so it was not a complete failure.
However, the movie left the fans disgruntled and the film was a very big letdown. With the superb productions of the Batman movies, Green Lantern was way off the pace and rather than being remembered as a comic book classic, it could end up being remembered as a big screen flop.
