Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie, who is set to make her debut in the hit HBO reality series as Brienne of Tarth, has revealed how she sees many similarities between her character and herself.

Christie explained to SFX, "I wanted the part so very badly because from reading the books the character was so like elements of myself. I've not come across a part like this before, whereby the complexities of being an extremely tall woman are explored. So I decided I had to go all out for it."
She added, “I wasn't someone who went to the gym, but a big part of this character is her physicality. She's not just tall, but big, broad, phenomenally strong. She's extremely athletic, a master swordswoman and horse rider. I started working out and lost a stone and a half [and] I put on over a stone of muscle.”

Gwendoline continued, “[Brienne] has an overriding sense of honour and what is right, and that's what makes her such a brilliant character to play. Her outer [appearance] is so stable and masculine, but inside she's so fragile.”
Game of Thrones season two continues on HBO on Sunday.
