Hugo Weaving, best known for his roles as Agent Smith in 'The Matrix' and Elrond in 'Lord of the Rings' has just signed on to Aussie crime drama 'The Mule'. The film is based on a true story, and is said to be shooting in Australia later this year.
Deadline reports that the details of Weaving's role in the film are not clear, but the film is based on a true story of the police capture of a drug mule and 'the fallout from that capture'. The production will be funded by Screen Australia, and it's considered an indie project.
Weaving was most recently seen in 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' and will be reprising his role as Elrond in the two sequels, 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' and 'The Hobbit: There and Back Again'.
In addition to the Hobbit films, Weaving has two movies coming out this year: 'The Turning', which stars Rose Byrne and Miranda Otto, and 'Mystery Road', which co-stars Ryan Kwanten and is about a murder mystery. He's also in pre-production for 'Healing', which also stars up and coming star Xavier Samuel and Robert Taylor.
