It has been confirmed that The Weinstein Company has picked up the distribution rights for the movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, based on the Nelson Mandela book of the same name, which focusses on his life.

Idris Elba plays Nelson Mandela
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is directed by Justin Chadwick (The First Grader, The Other Boleyn Girl) and is produced by Anant Singh, who worked hard to get the movie made. Singh got in touch with Nelson Mandela while he was still in prison and acquired the rights to his book back in 1996.
It has been a long process to finally get the film to hit the big screen but it has been well worth it. The screenplay for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom has been penned by Academy Award® Nominee, writer William Nicholson (Les Misérables, Gladiator, Shadowlands).

Naomie Harris plays Winne Mandela
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom stars Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela and Naomie Harris as his wife Winnie. The supporting cast features some of the top acting talent in South Africa, including Tony Kgoroge, Riaad Moosa, Zolani Mkiva, Jamie Bartlett, Lindiwe Matshikiza, Deon Lotz and Terry Pheto.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is expected to be released later this year.
