British actor James McAvoy has slammed British producers for dumbing down movies for US audiences. The X-Men: First Class star, claims that the British film industry’s future is looking bleak as producers are too busy trying to make their films understandable for the US, but this only ends up patronising them.
McAvoy said, "We dumb our movies down because we want Americans to understand them. The Americans watch it and go, 'this is a really unsophisticated dumbed down movie. Why would we want this? Why do we like this? We don't'." He then added, "It's like we're patronising them and short changing ourselves."
James stated that intelligent British films, such as Tom Hooper’s movie The Kings Speech, can actually be successful and embraced by audiences in the US. He said, "I think the whole thing is to keep trying to make the best possible movie that you can and hopefully the cream rises to the top." McAvoy also revealed that he rarely ever gets recognised when walking down the street.
