From the very moment that Marvel announced that they were going to bring a Guardians of the Galaxy movie to the big screen, everyone was giving their opinions on who they thought should play which characters in the film. There was a lot of discussion about the potential cast line-up, before auditions began to take place.
Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa was one of the stars to audition for the role of Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy and, at one point it looked like he was a dead cert for the role. Rumours then emerged that Jason was demanding more money than Marvel were willing to offer and Marvel will never be held to ransom by an actor. This led to Jason losing the role and Dave Bautista being cast as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy. Jason has now opened up about the role, stating the he believes Dave is perfect for it.
Momoa told Zap2It, "Dave (Bautista) is perfect for that role, for Drax. It didn’t really fit in my time because I’ve done so many things where I don’t say much and I’m colored up and I have my shirt off again. I made a conscious choice to turn down some movies that were action-based to direct Road to Paloma so people could see that side…. It’s not that it’s not a good role, it just wasn’t the right thing. I was on Stargate: Atlantis for four years playing a similar character called Ronon, who was an alien who didn’t say much and grunted. I’ve been there and done that, whether people have seen it or not. You want to stretch"
While Jason Momoa has missed out on playing a Marvel character in Guardians of the Galaxy, it looks like he could yet appear in another superhero movie, this time with DC and Warner Bros. It is claimed that Jason Momoa is in line to play a villain in the planned Batman vs. Superman movie. Every cloud and all that.
Guardians of the Galaxy will open on August 1, 2014, while Batman vs. Superman will open on May 6, 2016.
