The 1988 movie Bloodsport is arguably the best film that Jean Claude Van Damme has ever done and when it was announced that Taken 2 writer Robert Mark Kamen was remaking it, fans around the world cheered with joy. Even Jean Claude Van Damme was happy about it and wanted a small role in the movie. However, it appears that the remake has nothing at all to do with the original.
Kamen explained to Crave Online, “The film resembles the original in title only. It has nothing to do with any Kumite contest. It has nothing to do with Frank Dux. If the title was not the same, you would not associate the two films.”
He continued, “To use JCVD would make no sense because the association would be lost as the story has nothing to do with the first one. If anything it would be a distraction. It has nothing to do with splits, muscles or grudge matches.”
So what Robert Mark Kamen is basically saying is that they are going to claim that they are making a Bloodsport remake, to get fans of the original excited but then just cash in on a completely different film. Seems a bit strange really and a bit cheeky to use a title to make money. Although, if they had have put Jean Claude Van Damme in it, it would have sparked much more interest.
