Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain are now the strongest frontrunnersfor the Best Actress Oscar. Lawrence was considered an initial lock on the win when ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ first came out in limited release, but the recent flood of support for ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ and Jessica Chastain has put Chastain on par with Lawrence in terms of industry buzz.
Both actresses have been nominated in the lead actress category in the Screen Actor Guild nominations that were announced yesterday, and both have again been nominated in the lead actress category for the Golden Globes (although for the Globes, they will be competing in different categories – Chastain in drama, and Lawrence in musical/comedy). Both are likely to win at the Globes due to being nominated in different categories, but right now, neither of them is thinking about that.
When Chastain responded to her Golden Globe nom, she spoke to USA Today and said, “I found out like 20 minutes ago. I'm really like, stunned. Because two years ago my movies hadn't really come out yet. So I feel this strangeness of, 'Oh my gosh, what's happened in the past two years?' It's very sweet." She also added, “"I never got invited to my prom at my school, so I never had the opportunity to dress up when I was younger. Until the past couple of years. And now being able to go to the Golden Globes, it just means not only is it such a beautiful thing to be recognized for playing this incredible woman, Maya, now it's like, 'I get to wear pretty dresses again!'"
Lawrence was in Hawaii filming Catching Fire, and her response to the nomination was a lot less stunned than Chastain’s. She spoke to MTV News, saying, "My agent called me at 5:30 and I thought the set of my movie had burned down, or Josh [Hutcherson] had died or something. I didn't realize! I was so tired!" She added, “It's amazing. It was such an incredible part. All the blood, sweat and tears that everybody put in this movie, and how much it meant to everyone, we can all share it together. David and Bradley got the recognition they deserve. It's wonderful to be able to share it with everyone."
