The Independent Spirit Awards are held every year, exactly a day before the Oscars. While the Oscars celebrate the year in film, the Spirit Awards focus just on independent filmmaking. However, they're still sometimes a telltale sign of who will win the golden statuette the next night.
This year, Jennifer Lawrence and Silver Linings Playbook took the top honors, collecting Best Actress, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay. While it is a bit of an unfair advantage considering that Silver Linings Playbook is barely independent when considering the budget, it’s still a feat in filmmaking if you take into account the subject matter and the number of days in which it was shot.
Jennifer’s win cements her status going into the Oscars as the frontrunner, but Emmanuelle Riva also won Best Actress over at the Cesar Awards in France so the category is still a toss-up. David O. Russell is one of the leading contenders to win Best Adapted Screenplay tomorrow against Lincoln and Argo, and this win might push him over the edge.
Unlike those two categories, Silver Linings doesn’t really have a good shot at winning Best Picture, if only because Argo has too much momentum going for it. Other Spirit Award winners include Steven Chbosky for Best First Feature [Perks of Being a Wallflower], Michael Haneke for Best International Film [Amour], Matthew McConaughey for Best Supporting Actor [Magic Mike], and John Hawkes for Best Actor [Battery Dying].
