Jessica Chastain has revealed in a new interview with the Independent, Chastain revealed that her hectic work schedule is keeping her from campaigning for an Oscar like the rest of the nominees in her category. She says that doing theater for ‘The Heiress’ is tiring but rewarding, adding, “It's exhausting but I love the films. I love being on Broadway. I don't have time to go to these Oscar dinners and stuff but perhaps that's for the best. Because I'm on stage, I'm away from the craziness of that kind of campaigning. It's really exciting."
She also talks about the hot streak that her career has been on lately, saying, “It's exciting because last year people were saying, 'This is your moment'. So last year I kept saying, 'I'm going to enjoy this because it's never going to happen again. I am never going to have a year like this again, it's incredible,' and here I am this year, thinking, 'I am never gonna have another year like this'. I've been very lucky. It's made up for the years I've not been able to get an audition for a film. The past two years have been exceptional."
It’s definitely true that Chastain has had a phenomenal two years, and it’s also true that her busy schedule is keeping her from campaigning for the Oscar. In fact, one of the biggest reasons that Jennifer Lawrence won the SAG award over Chastain was because Sony didn’t send out all the screening materials in time to reach all the members. On the other hand, the Weinstein Company sent screeners, presents, gift certificates, and everything else he could to the entire SAG body, encouraging them to vote for Lawrence. Now, there is no dispute that both Chastain and Lawrence are well-qualified to win for Best Actress, but the politics of the race have to be taken into account.
Because Lawrence is able to do the ‘Oscar dinners’ and go to other such campaigning events, and Chastain is busy on Broadway, it might be an uneven race in terms of exposure to Academy members. Everyone knows – it’s not just about the best performance, but who manages to get to the most Academy members as well.
