It seems that crossover superhero movies are becoming all the rage in Hollywood at the moment but this is not a new concept, as there has been previous superhero crossover ideas. One such idea was the plan by DC to revive their Batman and Superman franchises with one movie.

DC decided that a Superman vs Batman movie would be a great way to reintroduce each character and, even though fans were not keen on the versus idea, they decided to move forward with the plan. They even brought on board a director and began casting their leading men.
The favourite to star as Superman in the movie was Josh Hartnett, who would have been in for a big payday as the superhero. Meanwhile, Colin Farrell was in line to play Batman as the two DC superheroes faced off in Superman vs Batman. Can you imagine that?

German director Wolfgang Petersen (The Perfect Storm, Troy and Air Force One) was brought on board to helm the project and made it clear that he was excited by the idea of Superman vs Batman. However, they eventually decided against it and got rid of both actors, before casting Christian Bale in a Batman reboot and Brandon Routh in a Superman sequel.
There are now plans afoot to reboot both franchises with them both eventually appearing in the Justice League movie in 2015.
