It has been reported that Columbia Pictures are moving forward with their follow up to the 2010 hit movie The Karate Kid. Due to the success of The Karate Kid, which has managed to gross almost $350m worldwide, it was almost certain that a sequel was going to be made. It was original thought that the screenplay would be written by the writers of Kung Fu Panda but it seems that things have changed there.
The new writer, who has been brought on board to pen the script for The Karate Kid 2, is Zak Penn, whose last big screen movie was The Incredible Hulk back in 2008. However, Zak has still been working in the industry, writing and producing for the television show Alphas. It is also expected that director Harald Zwart will return to helm the project, after previously declaring an interest in The Karate Kid 2.
As of yet, Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith have not officially signed up for The Karate Kid 2 but it seems like it is only a matter of time before they do. With the script for The Karate Kid 2 being written now, we could see the movie hit the big screen sometime in 2013 or maybe 2014. Watch this space.
