It was back in 2012 that we got the reboot of the Judge Dredd movie franchise, with the film that was simply titled Dredd and starred actor Karl Urban in the lead role. Unfortunately for Dredd, Karl Urban and everybody else involved, the movie was not successful at the box office, although it has become a bit of a cult classic with the fans, who have been calling for a Dredd sequel to get made.
While there is no plans to make a Dredd movie sequel on the big screen, there are plans afoot for a small screen version of Judge Dredd, with the planned new series Judge Dredd: Mega City One. Fans have now been calling for Karl Urban to reprise the lead role in the TV series, as they feel he is the perfect actor for the role, and Karl himself has admitted that he would be open to making a return as the Judge.
Urban was promoting his new movie Thor: Ragnarok, when talk turned to the Judge Dredd TV series, with the actor confirming, "Well, Rebellion, who owns the rights to Judge Dredd, are currently developing a television series called Mega-City One, and I’ve had many discussions with them about my involvement of which I am interested, and I said to them, 'Listen, if you write a character that has a function and a purpose and contributes to the overall story, then I might be very interested in reprising that role.'"
He added, "I certainly wouldn’t want to step into it and just pay lip service to the movie. There has to be some material there that warrants further exploration of that character. So the ball’s in their court."
While Judge Dredd: Mega City One is still in the relatively early stages of development, it could well be some time before we see it coming to the small screen, but we are hoping and praying that we get Karl Urban back in the lead role.
