If ever there was proof needed that poor critical reviews of a movie do not necessarily mean it will become a failure, then look no further than the hit movie Hocus Pocus. When it was released back in 1993, Hocus Pocus was slated by every critic going but that meant absolutely nothing.
Hocus Pocus went on to become a cult classic and now, 20 years later, the movie is loved just as much, if not more than it ever was. Hocus Pocus starred Kathy Najimy, Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker as three witches looking for eternal life, by taking all the children in town.
Kathy Najimy, Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker have all gone on to have successful careers since Hocus Pocus but that is not the case for all of the cast. The lead child actor was played by Omri Katz who, after a small amount of success, has since decided to retire from acting.
With Hocus Pocus receiving a poor critical response but going on to become a cult classic, it opened the door for other movies to do the same, which is exactly what has happened over the years. The latest movie to follow that trend is Sharknado, which was panned by critics but already looks set to follow in the footsteps of Hocus Pocus.
