Leonardo DiCaprio urges Thailand to make Ivory sale illegal

  • Ivory trade is huge in Thailand
  • Leonardo DiCaprio has been fighting against the sale of Ivory
  • He has urged Thailand to get on board and stop Ivory trade
Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio is a man who always wears his heart on his sleeve and is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in. Leonardo has now issued a message to the Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, urging that Thailand helps in the battle to stop the sale of Ivory.
Leonardo DiCaprio is against the Ivory trade

DiCaprio took to his official Facebook page to tell his fans, "Illegal wildlife trade is the most urgent threat facing species like tigers, rhinos and elephants. These animals are being killed every day to feed an escalating demand for their body parts."

DiCaprio then went on to point the finger directly at Thailand and urge them to help in the battle against Ivory trade, "Much of the ivory trade goes through Thailand. We can help save these beautiful animals. Join me and the World Wildlife Fund and tell Thailand to ban all sales of ivory," he added.

While elephants are seen to be a sacred animal in Thailand, it is legal for ivory to be harvested from captive Thai elephants and then sold in shops and markets. A petition has now been started, with the view to getting one million signatures, before then presenting it to the Thai Prime Minister. So far, over 400,000 people have signed the petition.
