Deadline is reporting that ‘Les Miserables’ is debuting at #1 in 2,800 theaters after being the #1 advance ticket-seller among all the Christmas Day releases.
Nikki Finke is reporting that although Universal was only hoping/expecting more than $10 million, it is now on track to make around $18 million for the day. The film is rated PG-13 and runs more than two and a half hours, and stars a huge list of marquee names, including Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, and Samantha Barks.

A studio representative also told Finke at Deadline, “Christmas Day has very unique play patterns by genre, region of the country, ethnicity, and target demo. You won’t really know where films are headed until Friday. But that’s a fantastic number for Les Miz.”
'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' is at #3
Django Unchained’ is also off to a fantastic start at #2 with a reported $13 million for the day, which is a great start for an R rated film. Django should be on track to match Tarantino’s previous ‘Inglorious Basterds’ and the ‘Kill Bill’ saga. At number #3 is not a new release, but ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’, which is moving down two places with an estimated $8-10 million for the day.
