Lolo Jones was recently selected to the US women's bobsled team for the 2014 Winter Olympics as a pusher and some of her teammates are not happy because they feel her selection was due to the fact that she is a celebrity athlete. Lolo Jones was named to the US Winter Olympic women's bobsled team because her recent results as a pusher have resulted in better results for her boblsed teams than those of her competitors.
However, what people have had difficulty accepting is that Lolo Jones is an attractive woman who happened to move from one sport, track and field, to their sport of bobsledding and she has outperformed them while also embracing the new form of marketing known as the Internet. Lolo Jones has overcome immense adversity in remaining an elite athlete in pursuit of her goal of earning an Olympic medal. In the 100 meter hurdle even she lost an almost certain gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and at the 2012 London Summer Olympics she did not medal. Instead of giving up on her goal of attaining a medal at the Olympics she has pursued her goal through the Winter Olympics.
What some of her competitors are having a problem with is the fact that she has made herself an Internet and pubic celebrity by not hiding herself behind the cloak of being an athlete and letting people learn about her. She did not avoid one interview after not winning a medal in either the 2008 Summer Olympics or 2012 Summer Olympics. Lolo Jones let the press know about her frustrations in the dating world because of her desire to remain a virgin until she became married. Lolo Jones even discussed her physical battle with a fellow teammate during her training to make the US bobsled team.
Lolo Jones is the lightning rod for criticism because she is an attractive female athlete who understands that to market oneself you must be willing to let the world know you exist and most of her fellow athletes are unwilling to do so or have no desire to do so. As such, anything she does is going to attract attention and bring both accolades and criticism.
Sometimes in life people blame others for their own mistakes so they can avoid having to accept responsibility. Lolo Jones has done nothing wrong in making the 2014 US Winter Olympic team and it would not surprise anyone in the athletic world if she helps her team win a gold medal in the bobsled and becomes an even greater celebrity as a result.
