Maggie Smith's new role in Hallmark Channel's new series is a bit different from roles she's taken in the recent past. From a sexy vampire in the Twilight series to a teacher assigned to a small frontier school on Canada's Western Frontier.
In 'When Calls the Heart,' Smith plays Elizabeth Thatcher, a woman of privilege who is used to moving in high society circles. The character experiences a huge culture shock when her first assignment as a teacher takes her out to a small prairie town on the Canadian western frontier. From rowdy students to the dangers of her new home, and sexy Canadian Mountie Jack Thornton, Elizabeth must overcome much to succeed in her job. A number of other stars join Maggie on the show, including Emmy Award winner Jean Smart, 'Army Wives' actress Erin Krakow, and 'Last Resort' star Daniel Lissing.
The series is based on the bestselling Canadian West book series written by Janette Oke. The two hour extended pilot film debuts on the Hallmark Channel on October 5 at 9pm EST. The show will then have a bit of a break before returning in January 2014.
