There have been some very interesting tennis matches over the course of the past few days, with the French Open throwing out a number of surprise results. The biggest surprise of them all was seeing world number 1 Serena Williams going out early, which pushed Maria Sharapova to the favourite for the tournament, and she is still going strong.
Things have not exactly been plain sailing for Maria Sharapova though, as the 2012 French Open winner had a battle on her hands during her quarter-final match against Garbine Muguruza. The 27-year-old Russian beauty dropped the first set 1-6 to the 20-year-old Spanish star, in a set which took just 27 minutes to complete.
That first set made a lot of people sit up and take notice, and there was a feeling that Garbine Muguruza was going to add another huge scalp to her name, after knocking out Serena Williams in the second round. However, Maria Sharapova showed why she is now the favourite to win the French Open, as she fought back to win the next two sets 7-5 6-1, to book her place in the semi finals.
The match would certainly have taken plenty out of Maria Sharapova, who had to work hard for all two hours and six minutes of the match against Garbine Muguruza. Maria will now face another tough test in her semi finals match, where she will meet Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, after she beat Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro in three sets, winning 7-6 2-6 7-5 to book her place in the semi finals.
Who do you think will win the French Open?
