World number two, women’s tennis star Maria Sharapova has questioned her fellow Russian star Anna Chakvetadze’s decision to run for Russian parliament, saying it is likely to affect her tennis career. Although it is not yet clear whether or not she will continue in the sport.
Sharapova explained, “I think it obviously takes a lot of time, so it's tough to do two things, two pretty big things at the same time. But if she feels strong about it, obviously it's a personal choice.” However, Maria did state that she was “not really sure” if Anna would continue playing.
Russia's Right Cause Party have put forward three candidates and the Russian media has confirmed that Anna Chakvetadze is one of them. The 24 year old has had to withdraw from a number of WTA events this year and her political ambitions could put an end to her tennis career.
