It is that time of year again, where we get all excited about the upcoming Christmas Specials of some of our favourite television shows, with the BBC giving us plenty to get excited about over the festive season. One of the shows that we are most looking forward to seeing this year, is the Sherlock Christmas Special, which is going to give us some interesting changes.
The Sherlock Christmas Special has been titled The Abominable Bride and will be set in Victorian times, and actor Martin Freeman, who plays the role of Watson in the hit series, has spoken a little about what to expect. Martin says that there could well be a change in the dynamics of the relationship between Sherlock and Watson, which has many fans intrigued as to what he means exactly.
Freeman was being interviewed by the guys over at Den of Geek, when he explained to them, "It might change it slightly. I think that one of the things people who really loved Conan Doyle liked about ours was that it wasn’t very Nigel Bruce-y. I love Nigel Bruce—that was one of the first Holmes adaptations I watched and I absolutely love their relationship and both those characters—but [his Watson] was much more able I suppose, like in the books. He is a very able man, and he would be the main guy in the room if it wasn’t for his friend."
He added, "So he’s still that, he’s still a soldier, still a military man, he’s still capable, but I guess sometimes with the formality, that might change it slightly. I mean, there’s still the bite and obviously the Victorian era wasn’t five thousand years ago, people are still doing the same things to each other they’re doing now, but they’re finding slightly more polite ways of doing it, as befits gentlemen. So that might change it slightly though I still have my function and he still definitely has his, which is recognisable to Steven and Mark’s version."
The Sherlock Christmas Special aka The Abominable Bride, is set to air on BBC One on New Year's Day. We cannot wait.
