Japanese superstar Mika Nakashima has opened up about the illness, which nearly cost her the career that she had worked so hard for. Mika had built up a successful music career and a huge following when, in October 2010, she developed an ear problem, which halted her career for six months, as she could not sing.
Mika has now made her long-awaited comeback with the release of her new album Real, which is her seventh studio album. Mika has spoken about her ear problem, admitting that, coming to terms with the illness was the inspiration behind much of her new album.
Nakashima revealed, "I was only thinking of disappearing, I was sick and tired of singing, all the things that I was sure to like looked crooked to my eyes, I felt as if I was only a piece of junk. I wrote these lyrics honestly as I had no intention to tell lies or put on a show. I felt, 'No matter what others think of me, I'll only write the truth'."
She added, "I couldn't hear external sounds and could hear only my voice echoing in my ears. I couldn't control the volume of my voice, and I lost my sense of rhythm and intonation. I promised those around me and my fans I would make a comeback. If I didn't set this goal, I felt I wouldn't be able to stand on my feet again."
Mika Nakashima is on a tour of Japan that will see her play 26 concerts in 23 different venues.
