Nickelback is one of the most commercially successful rock bands in the history of music having sold more than 50 million albums, had five multi-platinum albums, earned six Grammy nominations and 12 Juno wins. However, despite all their success they are also one of the most reviled, most hated bands by their critics.
They have been criticized for being sexist, lowbrow and bland and yet they have been able to stay popular with fans because they refuse to be influenced by the critics.
Lead vocalist and guitarist Chad Kroeger probably typifies the attitude of the group in that all the critics do not bother them because they know their fans like their music and they are doing what they want. In a recent interview with the Canadian Press that was included in a National Post article (November 24) he noted how his wife, superstar music performer Avril Lavigne for the past several months has been reminding him, ok more like teasing him that he was about to turn 40 years old which he recently did. His response was basically 'so what'.
He did not care because his attitude is if you are happy about where you are in life, it does not matter how old you are turning and that is basically the attitude of his band.
The band started in 1995 and since their beginning have released eight albums including their recent release of "No Fixed Address". The band has become renowned for filling stadiums worldwide, even in countries where there is no rock stations and that makes them one of a very small group of rock bands that can make such a claim.
Nickelback knows that they have lasted through a generation of music and from the looks of how their fans are still supporting them I think the critics should get used to the reality that they might reach "Rolling Stones" longevity because these guys are not going anywhere and they are enjoying what they are doing.
