Although Petra Nemcova, the beautiful Czech supermodel who has graced countless covers and been featured in seemingly endless fashion shows and clothing line openings, has been modelling for over ten years, she finds it important not to be stuck in the past when it comes to modelling. In a recent interview with a British tabloid, Nemcova spoke at length about how an Instagram following and online fandom are just as appealing to fashion brands as looks are in the current online marketplace.
She notes that Instagram models with extensive followings, even those with exterior fame like Cara DeLevigne or Kendall Jenner, are reaching millions of people every day on their personal accounts, which makes them prime targets for companies desperate to advertise effectively in the younger demographics.
Petra went on to say that online modelling success was having a disruptive effect on the fashion industry, but she did not seem angry or resentful -- merely bemused. After her own rise to fame post-Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, she has no resentment toward younger models who are getting chances that she could never have had without being discovered.
As she points out later in the interview, the Internet is simply leveling the playing field without diluting the quality of the models. Now models can be signed to major agencies or book huge gigs and contracts without having to leave the comfortable space of their bedrooms. Nemcova continues to be beautiful and famous, and all of this will have little impact on her, but she enjoys seeing the presence of newcomers in the fashion field anyway!
