Robert Downey Jr. has begun promoting the upcoming Iron Man 3, which is sure to break box office records the minute tickets start selling. During a recent interview with Moviefone, Downey Jr. spoke about Pepper's role in Iron Man 3 and in the Marvel franchises, and explained that in this day and age, women should be given more to do than just stand there and look pretty.
If we didn't love him enough already, he continues, saying, "How do we have it so she’s not going [whining], ‘Tony!’ and I’m going [growling], ‘Where’s Pepper?’… That’s the other thing that I have been pushing for. She's in great shape, she’s really game. There’s all these genre movies and you have these capable women and they’re like, ‘Oh my god, some action is happening, I better step away or get caught in something over here.’ It’s like, ‘Really, is that where we’re at in the 21st century?’”
He also adds that he insisted that Pepper be included in the Avengers story line, only because it wouldn't make sense if the filmmakers pretended that Pepper was out of town instead.
Iron Man 3 is set to release worldwide on May 3rd, and we're just seeing the beginning of the global marketing blitz that will start to hit the headlines within the next month or so. Some box office analysist are predicing the opening weekend for the film to be upwards of $150 million, and if Robert Downey Jr. continues making fans with statements [like above], that number may jump even higher.
