It has been reported that Arsenal have upped their attempts to keep hold of their star striker Robin Van Persie and have gone a rather unusual way about it. With Robin Van Persie yet to sign a new contract at the Emirates and a whole host of Europes top clubs interested in the Dutchman, Arsenal have tried a new approach to get Robin to sign to the club long term.
Arsenal have offered Robin Van Persie’s five year old son Shaqueel Van Persie a place in their youth training ranks. While it is believed that Shaqueel Van Persie is a talented young sportsman, it does seem like a desperate attempt to try and get Robin Van Persie to extend his contract, which runs out at the end of the 2012-13 season. However, Robin has talked up his son, claiming he is worthy of the attention.
Van Persie explained, "I honestly have to say that he Shaqueel has got a lot of talent for football. I recognise a lot of stuff of myself in him. His coach is really great. Arsenal has invited him a couple of times to come and play there but he likes it at his club. He's sensitive for a good atmosphere. Just like me.”
He added, "He loves to play golf. You've got some great golf courses here. He's taking lessons and we regularly play a round. Sometimes he beats me! He's got a great gift for where the ball has to go. My shots sometimes end up in the bush; his always go straight. He says: 'Dad, I'm going to chip now, gimme my this or that club.' He can do that perfectly as well."
Robin Van Persie has been in prolific for this season and Arsenal will be hoping that they can convince him to extend his contract. However, Robin has admitted that he will be postponing any contract talks until the end of the season. That could be a wise move, as Arsenal appear to be one of a number of teams who will be battling it out for the fourth and final Champions League spot. If Arsenal do not secure Champions League football for next season, Robin Van Persie will be going.
