Ever since the success of the 1985 movie The Goonies, which has gone on to become one of the most popular movies from the 80s, there has been a lot of talk about a potential The Goonies sequel being made. Almost every year we hear news that The Goonies 2 is getting ever closer to being made but we have yet to see the film go into production.
However, Steven Spielberg recently confirmed that he was closer than ever to making The Goonies 2 and now actor Sean Astin, who played the role of Mikey in the original movie, has given his views on The Goonies sequel. Sean says that he is 100% sure that The Goonies 2 will happen at some point in the future, he just does not know when.
Asting told Collider, "Yeah, Steven [Spielberg] has been talking about it since 1986. It’s a finger-snap of Mr. Spielberg’s away from happening. There have been lots of screenplays, and it’s been a process. Every time it’s come up, it’s been on the verge of happening."
While Sean does go on to state that he full believes that The Goonies 2 will happen, he also admits that it could be a long way in the future, even being made after the original cast from the movie have passed away.
Astin added, "So, my official public position is that it will absolutely, 100%, without question happen. I just don’t know when. It could happen in a month, or it could happen after I’m dead, but it will happen. It has to because so many people want it to. Goonies are Goonies. If Spielberg calls and says he wants us to do it, I can’t imagine it not working out."
