A couple of years back it looked almost certain that tennis superstar Serena Williams was going to not only equal, but also go on to break the grand slam record held by Steffi Graf for so long. Steffi Graf holds the record of 22 grand slam titles in the Open Era and Serena Williams has been stuck on 21 for quite a while now, missing a number of chances to join Steffi on 22.
Serena Williams continues to look completely dominant at grand slam events, until she gets to the final and it looks like the pressure of equalling the record gets to her and has a negative impact on her performance. At the age of 34, time is beginning to catch up to Serena and she is surely going to begin to see her game slipping and her other players taking over from her at the top.
With that said, Serena Williams is still arguably the best female tennis player in the world right now and she eased through her first round match at Wimbledon without really having to try, winning the her match against Amra Sadikovic 6-2 6-4. Serena has been a real force at Wimbledon over the years and it is expected that she will go far again this year.
However, there are a number of talented female tennis players on the scene at the moment, many of whom could cause Serena Williams some trouble, as she continues to search for grand slam title number 22. If Serena fails to win at Wimbledon, the question will then have to be asked whether she will ever actually beat Steffi Graf's record, or even catch her.
