It is being reported by Variety and E! that Shailene Woodley has been offered the role of Mary Jane Watson in the unnamed sequel to this summer’s smash hit, ‘The Amazing Spiderman’. The role has previously been played by Kirsten Dunst in the original Sam Raimi Spiderman series, but this story is said to be going in a very different direction. 
When news for the ‘Amazing Spiderman’ was first coming out, and Emma Stone’s name first leaked as the studio hopeful for the main female lead, it seemed that it was a given that Stone would be playing Watson with her fiery red hair. However, Stone was then confirmed to be playing Gwen Stacy, who was Peter Parker’s first love in the comics.
However, everyone involved in the movie has been saying that they will stick pretty close to the comics, which means [SPOILERS] that Gwen Stacy’s character will likely die at the end of the second movie. It would also mean that Mary Jane would then come into play, who is considered Peter Parker’s second love. Thus, we’d have a face-off between two of the hottest young actresses in Hollywood today – Stone is now considered an A-list star and is headlining her own movies, whereas Shailene Woodley recently broke out with ‘Descendants’ and who George Clooney loves. Stone’s prowess also lies much more in comedy, whereas Woodley is known more for dramatic roles.
The Amazing Spiderman 2 is set to go into production within the next year.
